Improvisation No. 2 by Daniel Modl

Aug 7, 2020

Improvisation No. 2 is the second work in 3 improvisations composed by Ryo Noda, a Japanese-born composer who studied with some of the biggest names in saxophone such as Fred Hemke and Jean-Marie Londeix. Noda is a prolific composer and had a significant impact on the upbringing of the modern classical saxophone repertoire we see today. Improvisation No. 2 is inspired by traditional Shakuhachi wooden flute playing. You will notice in this piece there are many what we call "extended" techniques throughout the entire piece that was not typical of classical saxophone playing such as bisbigliando and multiphonics. While the performance is scripted through the use of sheet music the interpretation of certain musical elements is left up to the performer, as it is called an "improvisation", so no 2 performances will be alike. I hope you enjoy the performance and May You Never Walk Alone.
