The first weekend of the 2019 Drum Corps International season is now behind us. 15 of the World Class units now have at least one performance under their belts, complete with scores and, more importantly, feedback from the judges to help them improve their execution and design.
We pointed out three things to watch for at Sunday evening’s DCI Crossroads event in Zionsville, Indiana and now that the show is over and the corps are on their way to their next stop on the tour, let’s review the list and see what we now know.
How will Madison Scouts portray the concept of "Majestic," an homage to the theater in Madison, Wisconsin?
This is actually something which fans will need to continue to watch for as the season progresses. The look of the corps itself is very evocative of their Boy Scout roots, right down to the caps on their heads. While the sound of the corps is straight up Madison, complete with a jazzy rendition of Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, the visual has more development in store before the “Majestic” concept is fully realized. This is common for early season performances and is not limited to the Scouts.
After their performances in the theater at the DCI Tour Premiere, where will the scores fall for Blue Stars, The Cadets, and Carolina Crown?
While the order of placement hasn’t changed since Thursday, the point spreads between these corps has. Carolina Crown has increased their lead over Cadets and Blue Stars with over 4 points between Crown and Cadets. Meanwhile, the Blue Stars have closed the gap on the Cadets by approximately half a point. It’s still early in the season, though, and the presence (or lack thereof) of other corps can have an effect on how the judges rank and rate those who they adjudicate each night.
Carolina Crown's brass is on another level... you will want to see this. Their percussion section is also taking significant strides—worth a look.
This is still the case. While Crown’s brass returned to the higher side of each section’s respective scores with a 14.7 to the percussion’s 14.5 tonight, the drum line is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the 2019 season. Can the one-two punch of potentially top brass AND percussion propel Crown to their second DCI World Championship title?
