Winds World Championship Bookends the 2023 WGI Season: Scores, Recap, More!
Check out this recap (including scores!) of the 2023 WGI Winds World Championship Finals, marking the official end to the 2023 WGI season
This weekend has been a doozy, hasn't it?
Piggybacking off of the twists and turns in last night's Percussion World Championship Finals event, the Winds competitors ended their collective season at UD Arena on Sunday in a similar fashion: high scores and a few key deviations from Saturday's Prelims results.
A Class
There were quite a few surprises in the two A classes; with both Independent A and Scholastic A ending the weekend with victors that didn't come out of Prelims with the W. Bob Jones HS brought home gold in Scholastic A, while Valley Christian HS claimed silver and Bellevue West HS walked away with the bronze. In Independent A, newcomers Eva Independent Winds conquered the class, leaving Vortex Indoor Winds in second and Ethereal Winds in third.

Open Class
There wasn't as much shuffling of positions in the Open Classes, with the Scholastic Open and Independent Open class Finals results looking very similar when compared to Prelims. Westfield HS walked away with top honors in Scholastic Open, overpowering Miamisburg HS and Dartmouth HS by solid margins. In Independent Open, LSM Winds outpaced the competition considerably, earning them a first-place finish over Valhalla Winds and Chromium Winds.

World Class
There was little change between Prelims and Finals in the World Classes, however there are a few fun storylines of note:
1. Avon HS has won gold in back-to-back years, bringing their total Winds gold medal count to four since the creation of the Winds competitive category in 2015. Avon is now tied with Chromium Winds and Rhythm X Winds when looking at total gold medals earned by a Winds program in its history; you'll want to keep that factoid in the back of your mind for the 2024 Winds season.
2. STRYKE Wynds brought the first-place hardware back to Palm Beach after their victory over the 2022 gold medalist UTRGV Winds, marking the beginning of what fans can only assume will be a fun back-and-forth battle for gold between the two programs.
Scholastic World Winds
1 | Avon HS | 98.350 |
2 | Cleveland HS | 92.475 |
3 | Greenfield Central HS | 91.825 |
4 | Lake Hamilton HS | 89.875 |
Independent World Winds
1 | STRYKE Wynds | 95.250 |
2 | UTRGV Winds | 93.650 |
3 | Horizon Winds | 89.675 |
4 | Elevate Winds | 84.775 |
5 | Legacy | 81.525 |
And with that, the 2023 WGI season has officially come to a close!
