The Bluecoats' 2021 production continues what they began in 2019 that spotlighted the music of the Beatles and became an instant crowd favorite from season premiere to DCI World Championship finals. This time, the corps steps through the door into the imaginary world of Lucy, "in the sky, with diamonds."

People often remember the 2015 DCI season as one of the most competitive — at the top of the leaderboard, in particular — in recent memory. In some ways, that’s true; the 0.575 points that separated first-place Blue Devils and second-place Carolina Crown on Finals night is the among the tightest top-two margins of the last 10 years.

Diamante Winterguard, based in Anaheim, CA, has become one of the most influential performance ensembles competing in WGI today. Their deeply emotional and elegant programs exploring fragile, complex human connections have catapulted the guard into the upper echelons of the sport, earning them a Bronze Medal as recently as the 2019 WGI World Championships. Needless to say, the color guard world waited with anticipation to see what the innovative company would do next.

When you watch Union High School take the field, you might be the slightest bit confused. Especially once they’re set up for the start of their show, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re asking yourself, is this going to be a standstill? 

“33 straight state finals appearances,” Homestead director Brad Wadkins said. “The last 30 years, we’ve been in the top four in the state. Six state championships and eight state runners-up.”

Matthew James and his fellow band directors at Lawrence Township High School were more than familiar with the kind of diverse musical talent they had at their fingertips. When an energetic, jazzy show concept began to materialize for the band program’s 2019 season, it only made sense to put some of these resources to work.
