“Only 14 of these bands can make the cut for Finals?”
That’s always the hard thing to believe at an event like this, right? Indiana and its surrounding states are filled to the brim with strong competitive bands, and it’s almost more surprising to see who did make the Top 14 than those who didn’t.
But before digging into the Finals lineup, the first thing to look back on from a long round of Prelims is the awards handed out by classification.
The full list of Class Champions: Avon (AAAA), Blue Springs (AAA), North Hardin (AA), and Western (A). Of those four, the first three qualified as finalists. Western will also perform Saturday night in exhibition at 7:15 p.m. ET.
While caption award sweeps were earned by Avon and Blue Springs, North Hardin nearly swept AA captions save for a tie for best general effect with Marian Catholic. Captions were also split in class A, with Western taking visual and general effect while Edgewood won music.
Now, to preface the schedule for Finals, it’s important to know how these bands were sorted. The Top 14 bands are grouped into two subsets of seven — those that finished between first and seventh, and those that finished between eighth and 14th, overall. From there, their performance order is determined by a random number drawing that takes place before the performances began.
So, it’s important to note that just because a band performs, say, 10th or 11th in finals, that band may very well have taken the first spot in prelims. In theory, they also may have taken seventh.
The order of Prelims finish won’t be public knowledge until the entire event is complete, so it’s hard to speculate as to specific competitive notes based on what’s happened so far.
But here’s what we do know.
A lot of last year’s finalists have made return trips to the Top 14. From 2018’s Indianapolis Super Regional, 10 bands are once again going to perform Saturday night as finalists, including Fishers, Carmel, Lawrence Township, Brownsburg, Blue Springs, Avon, Center Grove, Homestead, and Castle.
FIlling in the remaining openings however were some intriguing names, including O’Fallon Township, which was a Grand National Finalist in 2018 but didn’t compete at the Indianapolis Super Regional. Others included North Hardin, Mustang, Lincoln-Way and Lockport Township.
So, that’s about everything. Finals are set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. ET with the bands from Indiana University and Miami University of Ohio, before competition gets underway at 7:30 p.m. ET.
And if Prelims were any indication, the several hours of performances ahead should be well worth the watch.
