Just one week after an incredible lineup in Austin, BOA heads to North Texas and the Dallas/Ft. Worth Regional at Pennington Field in Bedford, Texas. Lewisville ISD Powerhouses
Last week the focus was on Leander ISD’s outstanding bands in Austin, but this week, it’s a different "LISD's" time to shine. Since 2012, one of the Lewisville schools has won each year’s edition of the DFW regional, and that doesn’t look to change this year.
Flower Mound has developed an identity of dramatically artistic shows, typically about artists or a certain era of art history. They also love to keep their show under wraps until their first BOA performance, so we won’t say anything specific, but you’ll definitely want to watch at 5:45 PM CT. With multiple regional and super regional champion titles in the last five years, they’re a clear competitor to win this weekend.
Hebron is another group that tends to sit toward the top of the placements. Their 2019 show “Among the Stars” will certainly feature their incredible mellophone section that could rival some drum corps! Since it’s still so early in the season, their music performance may not be as precise as some other groups, but they’ll certainly be playing the most challenging music of any group you'll see all day.
Marcus is the last of this trio that is almost guaranteed a spot in finals competition. Quirky and colorful, their shows always stick out among the crowd. They’re a group that doesn’t look like any other, and that uniqueness can be a breath of fresh air during a long, hot day of performances in the Texas heat.
Returning Finalists
Along with the Lewisville trio, there are six returning finalists from last year’s regional. Keller and L.D. Bell both finished in the top half of finals, and consistently place toward the top of any competition they compete at. Expect no different here in Bedford in 2019.
For the remaining returning finalists — Timber Creek, Waxahachie, Prosper, and Wakeland — each has its own strengths and weaknesses coming into this season. Some have faced director changes; some have new design teams; some have graduated a large class of seniors; and some have picked up an extremely talented class of freshmen. With such close competition, each group will have to give it their best to earn a finals spot again this season.
Other Challengers
But as we learned last week in Austin, making or not making finals last year doesn’t define what will happen this year. Coppell, Trinity, and Keller Central are three groups that finished just below the finals cutoff last season but will be looking to move up in the ranks.
For Trinity, they’ll have the home-field advantage, since Pennington Field is literally where they play their football games each week. Coppell and Keller Central have the benefit of past finals appearances, so many of these students and staff members know what it’s like to earn that coveted finals performance.
Out of State Attendees
This weekend, we’ll see Owasso, from Oklahoma, and Paragould, from Arkansas, travel into Texas to compete against some outstanding bands.
Owasso is a former national finalist and consistent super regional finalist. Their last trek to Texas in 2015 earned an impressive eighth-place finish at San Antonio among the best of the best. Look for a similarly strong showing from Owasso this year.
Paragould is a strong AA competitor that could give returning AA champion Forney a tough challenger. It’s always exciting to see stiff competition in each and every class.
The action kicks off at 7:30 a.m. CT right here on FloMarching!
