The last week of the 2019 DCI season is upon us—excellence is at an all-time high, and with that, comes competition. Here's what you need to watch for. Blue Devils and Bluecoats are going back and forth in the top spot. The Cavaliers, Spartans, and Pacific Crest are making an end-of-season surge. Mandarins pursue their second record-breaking season in a row. These are just a few of the main storylines from the 2019 season whose final chapter will be written by the end of Saturday night, on August 10th.

First, Open Class Champs - WATCH LIVE!
Before we go live in Indianapolis for the 2019 DCI World Championships, the 2019 Open Class World Championships will be streaming on Monday and Tuesday, August 5-6 in Marion, IN with 15 corps competing.
For ten of the last eleven seasons, Blue Devils B or Vanguard Cadets have won the Open Class title—this year, both corps will not be in attendance leaving things wide open at the top. A few corps have taken that opportunity to jump into a medalist position and add a new champion to the Open Class, plus there are a few more spots for some new corps to pop into Open finals.
By the end of Tuesday night, an Open Class corps that isn't BDB or Vanguard Cadets will be crowned for the first time since 2012. The excitement doesn't stop there, though. These corps will all move onto Thursday's World Championship prelims with the hopes of achieving a top spot among their World Class peers.
Eastern Classic Two-Night Panel Still Hard To Read
As one of the most historic stops on the DCI summer tour, Allentown is just one of those places that has a special spot in the hearts of the drum corps community. Because of J. Birney Crum's limited space, the show is split into two nights of competition on a hillside overlooking the hills of eastern Pennsylvania.
With a two night schedule that's determined before the season starts, any particular corps could be performing right before or after their closest competitors or not at all. This season had a particularly interesting line-up with the top 3 corps on Friday night, not to mention the Blue Knights and Blue Stars who have been very tight in scores most of this season.
Saturday night held the 3-6th place corps like The Cavaliers, Carolina Crown, and Boston Crusaders. Also in the schedule were some of the lower corps vying for a finalist spot including The Cadets, Mandarins, Phantom Regiment, Crossmen, and Spirit of Atlanta.
The two nights are, as always, hard to compare. Even though it's the same judging panel for both nights, if you combine the results from the two nights, it throws a wrench into the results we've been seeing from recent shows. For example, Carolina Crown jumped Santa Clara Vanguard for the first time this season. Pacific Crest jumped The Academy, moving into the 15th spot and earning the corps' highest score ever, 82.575. And The Cavaliers have opened a considerable gap on Boston Crusaders.
One thing is for sure, scores are tight.
