The biggest draw to this Power Regional is 2018 Independent World Champion unit, Paramount, from Atlanta, GA. Their 2018 program, “To Describe You,” was one of the lushest performances I’ve seen in years.
There were so many unique design elements. The uniforms with the flowing streams of fabric connected between their wrists and ankles created fantastic visual effects as the performers incorporated the fabric into both their movement and equipment books shaping and reshaping their uniform design and performing “costume changes” beneath equipment tosses.
The introduction of a flag line with a developing motif, from flags that were whole, to gradually slimmer flags that were 6”-wide streamers, all spinning the same work, was just a mastering of design. Their use of beige spandex sheets to create whirling visual effects and create backdrops allowed the performers to sell a fantastically crafted movement program.
The equipment writing was also gloriously intricate, capturing every nuance of the music, while simultaneously allowing the performers to shine from underneath their equipment.
Their 2019 program, “The Elusive Horizon,” promises to continue Paramount’s legacy as a real power player in Independent World.
