WGI 2019 is in full swing, and with a little over a month left in the season, groups across the country are continuing to develop and refine their productions in preparation for the big show in April. WGI Indianapolis is one stop along the way that you won't want to miss this weekend on FloMarching.
Prelims start this Saturday at 11 AM ET with a whopping 40+ groups; the final 35 groups will begin on Sunday at 10 AM ET.
This weekend’s show is one of the last of the non-Power Regional shows of the season, and groups like Centerville HS, Matrix Indoor, and Cap City Percussion are ready to bring their energy to the gym at Franklin Central HS!
Scholastic and Concert Groups Come To Indy
Scholastic groups from all over the Midwest will be heading to Indy this weekend, with A class groups making up almost half of the total groups in attendance. Groups such as McGavock HS (11:18 AM ET) from Nashville, TN will join the locals after much success in 2018. McGavock was a finalist at last year’s WGI finals with a score of 89.625.
Other WGI finalists such as Minooka Community HS (12:35 PM ET), which scored an 85.65 at finals last year, will also be in attendance.
Fans of WGI’s concert-based percussion groups will be pleased to hear that there will be 6 concert ensembles performing in Indy this weekend. Along with bringing a nice change of pace during the middle of the competition, these groups will be showcasing a more formal side of percussive performance.
Fishers HS (2:51 PM EST) of Fishers, IN is one such group and we are eager to see what they bring to the table this season after beating out Ayala HS by almost a full point for the WGI World Championship Scholastic Concert World title last year.
Big Things Going Down in World Class
Several big-name Scholastic World groups will be in attendance at this weekend’s events, including two of last year’s top 10 finalists: Franklin Central HS (4:41 PM ET) and Avon HS (5:14 PM ET). Both Indiana-based groups are known for their dynamic and exciting programs which keep audiences entertained and drive their region's influence on the marching arts community.
Fan favorite Centerville HS will be kicking things off at 4:30 PM ET and will take audiences back to the days of neon colors and sideways pony-tails with their production entitled “Coming of Age.” Borrowing elements of famous coming-of-age stories from the 1980’s like The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueler’s Day Off, their show follows a character as he goes from nerdy outcast to one of the popular kids who gets the girl in the end.
His transformation and story are sure to keep fans glued to their seats as the ensemble delivers this narrative set to the furious and funky beats that we’ve all come to love from Centerville HS.
Other big name World-class groups will be performing this weekend, including Cap City Percussion (5:57 PM ET) and Matrix Percussion (6:08 PM ET). Matrix from Akron, OH is set to take the stage in Indy this weekend as well with their show “Life As A Movie.”
Current Matrix member and snare drummer Courtney Price describes the show as a life lesson of sorts with the ensemble “[taking on the role of] an actor and playing a bunch of different roles.” Price continues, saying that throughout the show the group learns “some life lessons in the process, and realize that sometimes the best role you [can] play is yourself.” This weekend will mark Matrix’s first WGI appearance of the season.
Cap City Percussion invites audiences to ask themselves “can we escape our fate?” with their thought-provoking show “A Stretch of Fate.” In the words of battery arranger Dean Hickman, Cap City Percussion introduces the audience to a “universe full of the strings, needles and fabrics that create our individual destinies.”
Hickman goes on to say that the ensemble “questions the idea that everything is determined by forces [beyond their] control, and stretches the limits that fate has bound to them through the manipulation of fate’s own devices.”
Cap City Percussion has made a name for itself since its inaugural season in 2012 where they began in Independent A, then bumped up into Open class mid-regional and went on to win the WGI World Championship in PIO in 2013. Cap City has a strong history of showcasing the technical proficiency of its battery and front ensemble, and “A Stretch of Fate” looks to be another show for the history books.
