WGI Over-90 Club: Guards Going For Gold
WGI Over-90 Club: Guards Going For Gold
Guard World Championships start NEXT THURSDAY, April 12, and some of these color guards won't let anything get in their way--hitting 90 was just the start.
April 12 is quickly approaching and that means the start of the 2018 WGI Guard World Championships in Dayton, Ohio! In preparation for "Debbie," groups brought out the best in their performers at Power Regionals and Regionals all winter long as they strived for new high scores.
These Scholastic World and Independent World ensembles have not only conquered the brick wall of 90 points but also set the standard for the 2018 edition of Winter Guard International's color guard division.

Trumbull HS (90.2)/Blessed Sacrament (91.0) - March 17
Trumbull (CT), a group that's no stranger to WGI World Championships, led the charge with its first 90 of the season at the East Power Regional prelims in Pennsylvania.
Blessed Sacrament (MA) performed later that day, and despite the music cutting out multiple times, blasted past 90 points and scored a 91.0 for a crowd that was definitely ready to give it up for an amazing run. The following day in finals, SAC pushed to an extremely impressive 92.85—this time with the full soundtrack.
Paramount (90.9) - March 18
Paramount out of Atlanta has been one of those groups from the South that WGI fans always know to keep their eyes on—and 2018 is no different. At the Mid-Atlantic Power Regional in South Carolina, the group earned an 89.3 in prelims yet managed to come out of finals with a 90.9.
Avon HS (92.0)/Carmel HS (91.5)/Pride of Cincinnati (91.7) - March 24
The Guard Mid-East Power Regional was stacked this year, with six Independent World groups scoring around an 80 or above and seven Scholastic World groups doing the same. Three of these groups, however, reached their first 90s of the season in WGI competition: Avon (IN); Carmel (IN) of Scholastic World; and last year's WGI world champion, Pride of Cincinnati.
Pride of Cincinnati went on to earn a 92.45 in finals competition at the Mid-East Power Regional, the highest number for the day. Avon and Carmel held on tight to each other and scored a 92.4 and 92.3, respectively, in finals.
Onyx (90.15) - March 25
Although Onyx (Ohio) didn't break the plane on Saturday, it joined Avon, Carmel, and Pride in the over-90 club on Sunday in Mid-East Power Regional finals. The group scored an 89.5 earlier this season at the WGI Flint Regional on March 10.
With this being the group's 30th anniversary, Onyx is bound to pull out all the stops at World Championships in Dayton next week.
UCF Pegasus World (90.15) - March 25
Since its inception in 2012, UCF Pegasus has grown exponentially each year at WGI World Championships. From 2016 to 2017, the group improved its finals score from an 83.6 to 87.9 and has continued that trajectory since its success last April.
In fact, UCF Pegasus World is going into this year's World Championships with a higher score than it's ever earned in the Independent World class while at Worlds—a pretty impressive feat to be proud of in March.
