The WGI Southwest Power Regional is set to host one of the largest WGI events of the 2018 season this weekend.

Altogether, 80 color guards from every class of the guard division will compete at Flower Mound High School and the Coliseum on the campus of the University of North Texas, both located just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

World Class

CGT Dallas will certainly be commanding everyone’s attention again this year. After winning last year’s event with an 88.400, CGT Dallas went on to have stellar performances at the 2017 WGI World Championships, finishing fifth overall. This weekend, CGT Dallas enters the Power Regionals ranked sixth and is poised to have another strong finish.

You may remember its 2017 show and its unique use of these scaffolding props.

Inside Look To CGT's Finals Run

Also, watch out for Black Gold and Cypress Independent. Both of these guards are having strong 2018 seasons and are currently ranked 11th and 14th, respectively, which would put them in Finals at the World Championships in April.

Open Class

A very strong Open Class is represented by groups from the Scholastic and Independent divisions that will have everyone on the edge of their seats. CGT Denton, not to be confused with its World Class partner, is currently sitting second overall. Meanwhile, first-year guard Origins is rapidly climbing the standings at fifth.

The scholastic division of Open Class will see four guards in the top 12 current standings competing in Denton. Eastlake currently sits third followed by Bentonville, which is coming in at fourth. The 2017 Scholastic A world champions from Klein Oak have moved to Open and are currently 11th overall. They are followed closely by Tompkins in 12th.

Origins Make Their Dreams Come True

A Class

Year in and year out, the most competitive class in all of WGI is the Scholastic A class guards. In 2018, this is proving no different. With 41 A-class guards filling up Flower Mound High School on Saturday, it will be a very tough class to cut through and rise to the top.

However, Leander (Texas) High School is currently leading the class—not just at this Power Regional but also across the country. Leander is currently the No. 1 ranked A-class guard in WGI’s standings. Not far behind is Keller’s varsity program, which is sixth headed into the weekend.

So as you can see, it doesn't matter which class you might be watching this weekend. It will be an absolute barn burner in the Dallas area.
