A Juxtaposition Wedding Story
A Juxtaposition Wedding Story
The untold story of Juxtaposition's wedding dress used in their 2017 production based on Miss Havisham from "Great Expectations."
As ensembles were arriving at the WGI Pittsburgh Regional, it was no surprise to see performers show up in uniform, complete with full hair and makeup.
However, most weren't walking around in a 30-year-old wedding dress.
When the cast of Juxtaposition walked into the venue, Kalie Hersh was already in character as Miss Havisham, the wedding-gown-wearing spinster from the Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations." This dress wasn't just some random one bought from a thrift store or costume shop though. It was actually the wedding dress of Juxtaposition's guard mom, Teresa (Terri) Culver.
After Culver was married in 1986, her wedding dress -- like most -- found a home deep in the corner of her closet. As the years passed by, the dress remained tucked away until Culver heard Juxtaposition's designers were in need of a gown for this year's production to transform into the dingy, rotting dress that Miss Havisham wears throughout the story.
Realizing the dress was not going to be used again and that it would save the group money for other props and uniforms, she quickly dove into her closet and emerged with the dress in hand.

After going through several different dyes, washes, and aging processes, the dress was reborn as the costume for Hersh.
And so, Hersh arrived at every show this season already in full character, gracefully striding from body warmup to equipment warmup to the performance and then all the way back to the bus in the dress.
