One Song Reduces Anxiety By 65 Percent
Can one song reduce your stress and anxiety levels by 65 percent? Researchers say that this song can do just that.
Connections between music and one's emotional state have been established for a long time now, whether it's getting amped up for a performance by listening to your favorite hype music or putting on ocean sounds to help you fall asleep.
What about relieving stress and anxiety?
In the U.K., the researchers at Mindlab International sought to find a direct link to certain songs and how they affected the body during times of anxiety. In particular, one song stood out to the researchers.
The researchers attached monitoring equipment to the test subjects set to record brain activity, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate. Then they asked the participants to complete a series of difficult puzzles that are designed to induce stressful responses from the body. Then different types of music were introduced to see how certain songs would affect the levels.
According to Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson of Mindlab, the song "Weightless" reduced anxiety levels up to 65 percent and reduced test subjects' normal physiological rates by up to 35 percent.
"'Weightless' was so effective, many women became drowsy," Lewis-Hodgson said. "I would advise against driving while listening to the song, because it could be dangerous."
But how can one song have so much influence on the body? It was designed that way.
The composer's of "Weightless" are a group called Marconi Union. They worked with sound therapists to create specific harmonies and rhythms that are designed to slow the heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and even lower the stress hormone called cortisol.
So how does song make you feel? Take a listen and see how it affects your stress level. But please make sure you're in a place where falling asleep is safe.
