Stadium Tour of Kelly Reeves Stadium
FloMarching continues our tour of stadiums around the country. This week's feature stadium is Kelly Reeves ISD Athletic Complex.
Bands of America's 2016 season is gaining momentum thanks to some amazing performances from the bands at the opening weekend of regionals. As we head in to Week 2 of the season, FloMarching continues our tour of stadiums around the country. This week's feature stadium is the beautiful Kelly Reeves ISD Athletic Complex, home of the Bands of America Austin Regional.
Located in Round Rock, TX just north of Austin, Kelly Reeves is shared by schools in the Round Rock school district. The complex opened in 2003 and has a capacity of 11,000 spectators. Making your way around the stadium, it boasts a large scoreboard on the south end of the field. If you're sitting in the spectator section, bands will enter from the left side of the field down a long concrete walkway leading up to the field. Although the field does not have a track, the spacing around the bleachers is very open and allows for plenty of room to make your way around the front sideline.
The field itself is an astroplay artificial playing surface. Although the stadium is 13 years old, the field is still in great condition. Traction is good and the field does not have a very high crown at all. One thing to think about: While the field itself has a great draining system there is natural grass on either side of the concrete walkways entering and exiting the field. When bands are entering the field, they could get into mud or wet grass if it rains or if a performance steps off the concrete.
The press box is hard to miss from a performers point of view. It is one of the larger press boxes you will see at at high school stadium. The box is very tall so you will want to define the target points for the performers any time they have a horn press to the box moment. Like McAllen's Veteran Memorial Stadium, the distance from the field to the stands is quite significant. Performers will need to push their sound a long way so that the impact reaches the box. The stands are not very tall, but they are deep. If you are a staff member trying to help set up, then get high in the stands. There are two staircases located at about the 15-yard lines that will give you access from the field.
