What to Expect

Gear up for an experience like no other! The 2025 WGI Percussion/Winds World Championships is a 4-day display of pageantry and skill featuring Percussion and Winds programs from around the United States! Sit back and enjoy as hundreds of ensembles take the floor in competition across four venues around Ohio from Thursday, April 10th through Sunday, April 13th. Percussion competition will go from Thursday through Saturday, while Winds competition will only be on Saturday and Sunday.

The competing classes are as follows:

  • Percussion Scholastic A
  • Percussion Scholastic Open
  • Percussion Scholastic World
  • Percussion Independent A
  • Percussion Independent Open
  • Percussion Independent World
  • Percussion Scholastic Concert A
  • Percussion Scholastic Concert Open
  • Percussion Scholastic Concert World
  • Winds Scholastic A
  • Winds Scholastic Open
  • Winds Scholastic World
  • Winds Independent A
  • Winds Independent Open
  • Winds Independent World

Typically, Scholastic groups are programs that compete on behalf of their school, whereas Independent groups are self-organized and funded, and sometimes are an extension of a college program. Having various classes allows for ensembles to compete and be compared with other groups at a similar skill level. Ensembles in A Class use a beginners skill set, Open Class has an intermediate skill set, and World Class an advanced skill set. There is an age limit in the Percussion classifications across all classes, unlike in the Winds classifications, where individuals do not age out in the Independent Classes.

Concert classes feature stand-still performances made up of various percussive, auxiliary, and specialized instruments.

Winds ensembles are marching ensembles that can include any instrumentation found in a concert band or orchestra as well as color guard and percussion performers all in one group.
