BOA Grand Nationals Preview: Day 2
Summer band started in the dead heat of late July and August. Now, for the bands competing at the Bands of America Grand National Championships, presented by Yamaha, it will all come to a close in the chill of November. One hundred bands, thousands of performers, parents, volunteers, and directors converge in Indianapolis. Lucas Oil Stadium is the ultimate stage for the ultimate prize in the world of high school marching band. And it doesn't get any better than being called Grand National champions. Let's take a look at some of the bands that will be performing in Indy.

Grand National Championship - Prelims - Day 2


Morning Block 1

(All times are EST)
7 AM - Owasso H.S., OK
A 2005 and 2011 Bands of America Grand National finalist, the Owasso band was also the 2012 Bands of America St. Louis Super Regional champion and the 2015 Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional finalist. Owasso has been selected five times to attend the Tournament of Roses Parade and performed at the 1999 and 2012 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. At the 2016 St. Louis Super Regional, Owasso placed second overall. 

8:15 AM - Cedar Park H.S., TX
The Cedar Park High School Timberwolf band is the current UIL Texas 5A state marching band champion. The band is a perennial BOA Regional and Super Regional finalist and class champion as well as a former BOA Grand National finalist. The Cedar Park band was named the TMEA 4A Honor Band in 2014. Cedar Park finished ninth at the San Antonio Super Regional and fourth at the Austin Regional


Morning Block 2

10:45 AM - Tarpon Springs H.S., FL
The Tarpon Springs marching band was the 2014 BOA Grand National champion and has been awarded BOA National class champions seven times and BOA Regional class champions 21 times. In 2013, the band participated in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Tarpon Springs color guard was awarded the WGI Scholastic World champions in both 2016 and 2014. The band is a Sudler Shield recipient and was awarded the National Association for Music Education's "National Blue Ribbon Award for Program Excellence" this year. In its only appearance so far this season, Tarpon Springs won the Atlanta Super Regional

11:00 AM - Leander H.S., TX
The Leander band is a consistent UIL Sweepstakes recipient, a UIL State Marching Contest medalist, the 2015 BOA Austin Regional champion, and a BOA Grand Nationals finalist. At the Austin Regional, Leander placed second overall. Then at the San Antonio Super Regional, the band won the 3A class during prelims and finished third overall during finals.


Afternoon Block

3:15 PM - Panther Creek H.S., NC
Panther Creek High School has four concert bands. The wind ensemble just performed for the North Carolina Bandmasters Association Conference. This is Panther Creek's 10-year anniversary marching season. Panther Creek had a strong showing at the Winston-Salem Regional earlier this season. The band finished third during the finals and won Outstanding General Effect in the 4A division. 

4:00 PM - O'Fallon Township H.S., IL
The Marching Panthers will be the featured high school band for the 2016 Capital One Orange Bowl.  In the spring, the wind ensemble was a featured band at the MFA National Concert Band Festival. In 2015, the band was the Bands of America Clarksviile Regional champion. Also in 2015, the Marching Panthers performed in the Tournament or Roses Parade. O'Fallon finished sixth during finals at the BOA St. Louis Super Regional.


Evening Block

6:45 PM - Vista Murrieta H.S., CA
The Vista Murrieta High School marching band was a 2008 Bands of America Grand National Championship semifinalist band and was the 2008 Bands of America Esprit de Corps Award recipient. The band has consistently been a BOA Regional Championship finalist band since 2006. Vista Murrieta attributes its success to living by its core values of passion, integrity, respect, discipline, and excellence. We dedicate ourselves to our mission of "building people through performance" and upholding our school. Vista Murrieta won the 2016 BOA Long Beach Regional Championship. 

7:30 PM - Wando H.S., SC
Over 270 students participate in four concert bands, two percussion ensemble classes, color guard, marching band, jazz band, and chamber ensembles. The Wando symphonic band performed at the 2007 Midwest Clinic and was the 2007 recipient of the Sudler Flag. The marching band is the reigning, 10-time South Carolina state champion and has been named grand national finalist in each of its appearances: 2009, 2011, and 2014. Wando won the Class 4A division title at the 2016 BOA Atlanta Super Regional and finished second overall during finals.
